Wikipedia:
wiki means fast:
Wikipedia is a free online encyclopedia created and edited by volunteers around the world. The Wikimedia Foundation maintained it.
Jimmy Wales and Larry found Wikipedia on January 15, 2001.
It was found after Nupedia by wales in 2000.
They introduced this as the online encyclopedia, but there is a difference between Wikipedia and Nupedia.
Wikipedia can be edited by any volunteers in the world but Nupedia can be edited and put into articles only by experts and it has a lengthy system for checking and uploading the information in it.
Nupedia is not satisfactory, but after Wikipedia, within a few days, 20,000 articles in 18 languages were uploaded.
2006-1 Million articles;
2011-3.5 Million articles;
They design it as an open-source management style.
It has won many awards such as a free software award for projects of social benefit, princess of Asturias award for international cooperation.
A NOTICE IN WIKIPEDIA SITE: [Wikipedia Donation 2020]
Greetings to all knowledge lovers in India!
It’s a little awkward, so we’ll get straight to the point.
This Wednesday we humbly ask you to support Wikipedia. Wikipedia is hosted by a not-for-profit organization.
We don’t have ads; we don’t have shareholders.
We have donors, and we exist solely because of donations from our readers, like you. Our small staff works tirelessly to support the work of tens of thousands of global Wikipedia editors.
Who cares passionately about spreading neutral and reliable knowledge for all.
Your donation will sustain a small organization with a big mission: to help you learn everything you wish to learn and to keep history alive for future generations.
If everyone reading this gave just 150 rupees, we could keep Wikipedia thriving for years to come.
The price of your Wednesday movie theater ticket is all we need. Please take a minute to keep Wikipedia growing. Thank you.
THE NEXT NOTICE:
Hi, reader in India, it seems you use Wikipedia a lot; that’s great! This is the 2nd appeal we’ve shown you.
It’s awkward, but this Sunday we need your help. We don’t have salespeople. We depend on donations from exceptional readers, but fewer than 2% give.
If you donate just ₹ 150, or whatever you can this Sunday, Wikipedia could keep thriving. Thank you.
What’s happening:
After seeing this message, everyone thinks of the shutting down of Wikipedia may happen.
They also wonder how a huge website with many sources, which is the world’s seventh-largest site with the respectable aim of providing free knowledge to the world.
DOES THEY LACK MONEY TO MAINTAIN THIS SITE:
Wikipedia is not a reliable source. Articles are written by people like you and me, and it does not pay them for that.
Wikipedia sometimes shows fake news as anyone around the world edited it, but still, Wikipedia has ruled as a knowledge provider to all students and almost everyone whether it may be inside their syllabus or outside the syllabus.
They have enough money to maintain maybe they may have excess.
This site will run for decades.
INCOME:[How Does Wikipedia Make Money]
Wikipedia has articles in 298 (versions) languages.
WIKIPEDIA has over 5.9million articles, over 34 million users, over 32 million active editors, and almost over 500 articles are posted on it daily.
They associate WIKIPEDIA with a good deal of knowledge source websites such as wiktionary, Wikibooks, Wikisource, Wikinews, Wikiversity, wiki species, MediaWiki, media data, wiki media commons, wiki voyage, and several Wikimedia.
Wikimedia received nearly $80 million in donations
WHAT IS THE SOURCE OF INCOME?
According to a report, it has earned about 104 million in the year 2017. Their expenses in 2018 were 81 million. Yeah, they are still stable enough to run the site.
This revenue is not earned by advertisements or by affiliate marketing.
This is achieved by crowdfunding, which are donations given by readers who use Wikipedia.
It is not in a stage of shutting down, it will run stable for decades,
but asked for donations and to pay a minimum of 150 rupees.
they can only give this reason.
I think they may ask donations to serve us without any issues and they may get enough money to handle any problems arise.
people's view:
Some ignore donations by thinking of their revenues. That’s unfair to ask for money for readers.
“EVERYONE HAS THEIR THOUGHTS”
Some are ready to pay for the donations as they know the use of it and them for their genuineness.
Which was that every top website such as Facebook, YouTube, get income from advertisements,
but WIKIPEDIA hasn’t shown ads to the readers as they have come to seek knowledge not to see ads.
CONCLUSION:
The motive has won the hearts. They have been played a vital role in everyone’s life as a knowledge source provider.
Their move is like a part in fundraising following some REASON they can only reveal that.
